Christmas time on Hvar

Traditional cake - Pašurate [image source]

It is not likely that you will have a 'white' Christmas on our sunny island, but if you are looking for an authentic experience of Hvar's glorious tradition, it's a perfect time of the year to visit us. What is special about Christmas on Hvar? Home made cakes, family gatherings, singing Charismas songs, visiting old churches and decorating the Christmas tree do not make us so much different from any other part of Croatia or elsewhere in the Christian world, but what local people still cherish with great pride and grace is a spirit of old times and tradition which come alive year after year at Christmas time. The time seems to stop for a while just to remind us of the real values of life. By coming home for Christmas, we come back for what we left behind – for the spirit of family, spirituality, tradition, friends, all the tastes and sounds that remind us of our childhood and make us feel peaceful and happy.
The day before Christmas is called “Badnjak” or “Bodnji don”, if you are a Hvar native. By tradition this is the day when we decorate a Christmas tree. Most attention is paid to the Nativity scene which exhibit, below the Christmas tree, figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and Mary's husband, Joseph. Usually nativity scenes include other characters from the Biblical story such as shepherds and angels. The figures are usually displayed in a stable, or cave and around it.
Hvar women are traditionally engaged in making traditional cakes called pašurate (look and taste like mini donuts). Bakalar (codfish) or any other fish is served for lunch, and the whole family starts to get ready for “Ponoćka”, the midnight Mass, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Singing traditional Christmas songs a capela, by amateur church choirs composed of men, women and children of all generations, greatly enrich the distinctively festive mood of “Ponoćka”.
Christmas itself is a family day. Gifts are exchanges together with the best wishes on Christmas (Sretan Božić = Merry Christmas). After the morning Mass, everyone gathers round the table to enjoy the rich Christmas menu. Meat dishes are served at this occasion after which a whole spectrum of home made cakes follows. It is common to spend the Christmas day at home with family in festive yet intimate atmosphere.
Since it is time of giving, let us share with you a recipe of a traditional Hvar cake called Pašurate. It is very simple but delicious. Hope you will enjoy it.
¼ boiling water
salt
2 teaspoons of sugar
1 tea cup of rough flour
yeast
1 egg
Lemon peel
Orange peel
A little bit of fresh orange juice
Vanilla sugar
raisins
Cinnamon
2 teaspoons of rum
2 teaspoons of grappa
A bit of fine flour
Leave it to raise
Use a teaspoon to shape it and they fry in boiling oil

Merry Christmas! Sretan Božić!

Enjoy Olive Oil While You're at Hvar

Olive on Hvar [Image Source]

Other than the divine lavender, olive oil is another famous product that is made on this beautiful island of sunshine.

Olive trees have been cultivated for over a century on the island. Olive groves bordered by grey stones surround Hvar Island and you can see beautiful olive trees everywhere. Olive trees are known to be symbolic for hope, peace, and rejuvenation. They also reflect on the magnificence which is the Mediterranean.

Olive is an evergreen plant which has been grown for thousands of years for its eatable fruit or the raw plant from which the oil is made out of. The olive tree gives young plants in such a way that it easily rejuvenates the old tree. It was said that a pigeon brought Noah an olive twig after a flood as a sign that the water was beginning to withdraw. An olive twig in the beak of a white pigeon is known today as a symbol of peace.

Olive oil is the healthiest fat and plays a major part in the Mediterranean style diet. It is recognized to have health benefits due to both its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its high content of anti-oxidative substances. It is believed to lower the risk of heart disease, control cholesterol, provide protection from certain cancers, and reduce inflammation associated with arthritis. Olive oil’s benefits make it a popular choice among people who are health-conscious.

Olive harvesting season in Hvar is from October to November – and natives on Hvar consider this God's chosen time. Suncani Hvar is home to more than 350 olive trees found on its properties. This year, we had a very successful season, producing almost 500 litres of olive oil. Each year, hotel employees share in picking the olives – the same olives and olive oil that are served to guests in our restaurants.

Suncani Hvar offers the Olive Harvest Picnic where you can enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery and a marvellous harvest picnic under the olive trees. You can also choose to go to an olive oil mill, where you can observe and learn more about the art of creating some of the world's finest olive oils. You will experience the legacy of the Hvar culture and love this island of passion.

Together with the Agricultural Association, Eko Hvar has opened a shop specializing in Hvar island products. The shop is a popular place for locals and tourists who appreciate a one-stop shop for nearly everything that is produced on the island –its famous wine, lavender, rosemary, oregana, soaps, honey, dried figs, other indigenous Hvar products, and of course olive oil which is produced in traditional way with high ecological standards. Many tourists purchase olive oil as a useful souvenir.

Do you have a favourite recipe using olive oil? Comment below, share it with us on our Facebook page or better yet, tweet us on Twitter!

Some people may say Hvar is Sensual…We say it definitely is.

Relax and Feel
Sensuous [adjective]: perceived by or affecting the senses

Not only is Hvar a beautiful island, but when you leave, you’ll have memories of this place that you will never forget. Playing to all your senses, here are some ways that Hvar will impress your nose, eyes, mouth, and ears:

Smell – Grab a bag of “Lavandula Croatica” or a bottle of lavender oil. It’s one of Hvar’s most famous souvenirs and it will continuously remind you of the island. Hvar has fields of lavender and their fragrance is a special experience to visitors. They can be bought in souvenir and perfume shops in the town. It’s recommended for stress-relief and headaches. Just smell it, it’ll make you go “oooohhh.”

Hear - Other than the beautiful Croatian language, there are many young musical talents that you'll hear in Hvar. Check out this page of music videos of singers from Hvar – the video near the bottom are young performers singing traditional Dalmatian songs with no instruments, they’re so good!

See – The beautiful crystal blue sea and pebble beaches are there for your eyes to see. Visit various attractions on Hvar such as the Hvar’s Cathedral and Fortica Fortress to take in some architectural history. Visit the Main Square and visit the local souvenir shops for some fantastic colourful jewellery that you can take home to your family and friends. Don’t forget to also come see our Adriana Hotel, our modern and sensual designs will take your breath away!

Taste – You will never forget Dalmatian cuisine. Consists mainly of seafood, they are often cooked with spices, olive oil, garlic, and lemon. One of our must-try dishes is the black risotto which is made with squid ink sauce. Of course, don’t forget to pair your meal with a local wine from Hvar. We recently held our wine festival where we introduced the world to our local wines!

Feel – Get on a yacht and feel the crisp clean air and the warmth from the sun. Feel energized after hiking or a bicycle trip around the town. Most importantly, feel the relaxation that you rarely experience, whether it’s from lying on the beach, windsurfing on the waters, or from that massage that you greatly deserve.

What do you look forward to the most when you travel: tasting something new, seeing some historical sights, or just the feeling of relaxation?

Top 8 Travel Tips For the New and Experienced Travelers

Some extra planning won’t hurt. [Source of photo]

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or someone who is just embarking on a new journey, you will continue to learn new ideas on how to enhance your experience. We’ve put together our top 8 travel tips to you and hope you get to use them when you travel and visit one of our hotels:

Plan ahead: If you have an idea when you will take a vacation next year, plan now. Pick a location and book your flight ticket, you’ll be surprised how much of a difference the price is a few months before the trip and a year before. Familiarize yourself with the trip destination so you can save for your travel budget. Transportation and food will be the bulk of expenses.

It’s better to travel light: Lay out everything you want to bring on your bed so you have a visual idea of how much you’re bringing instead of just stuffing them in your suitcase. Check what the weather’s like at your destination, review your travel itinerary and only bring things that you think are necessary with a few extra options. Don’t forget, you can always buy a new shirt or skirt there if you like. How do you know you’ve packed too much? Make sure to leave a little bit of room in your suitcase just in case you need to bring back some souvenirs or you might just want to buy something for yourself!

Pack an emergency carry-on: Let’s cross fingers that this wouldn’t happen but with long distance flights, there are transfers and waits; what if you miss your flight or they lose your luggage? To save yourself some money and hassle, pack some emergency clothing and toiletries in your carry-on: contact solutions, make-up remover, toothbrush, extra underwear, etc. You’ll thank yourself later if you are ever stranded at a foreign airport.

Make sure you have your important documents: Passport, identification cards, flight ticket, cash, credit card, and information of your hotel. If they have the hotel information in the destination’s language, print it out as well. Some taxi drivers in foreign countries might not speak English and it’s best to show them the name and address of the hotel than you hoping they understood what you said.
Also make a few photocopies of your passport and keep it separated of your other documents. In case of lost/stolen belongings and in case the hotel reception needs the data you don’t have to leave your passport.

Bring some light entertainment and nourishments: Bring a book to read that you don’t mind giving away later if you are on a long distance flight. Carry your mp3 player with you to practice speaking the foreign language and some light tunes while you’re waiting for your next flight. Pack a granola bar just in case you really can’t stomach the airplane meals. It’s okay to bring some personal items with you on a trip; we all need something from home we like to hold on to!

Reach Out: Arrange for your airlines to email, text message or to call you with flight changes. Many travel companies and airlines are actually on Twitter now as well, so you can have the latest updates not only on last minute changes, but also everyday deals for future references.

Keep an Open Mind: You’re in a foreign country and who knows when you’ll be back? Try their local cuisines, attempt to speak the language, and experience things that you have never tried before. If you have never sailed before, take a shot at it! You will later appreciate what you have tried and go home with some great stories.

Relax and Have Fun:
Traveling can be stressful but you might as well have fun. You are traveling in a foreign country where you are having a whole new learning experience. Have fun and enjoy yourself and make it a goal to make your trip as pleasurable for you as possible.

What else would you add on our travel list? We’d love to hear some more and compile more travel tip posts! Find us on Facebook and Twitter to see our daily updates of the latest travel articles and Suncani Hvar updates.

Make Hvar your Culinary Location

Hvar Experience: Taste Hvar!
Deep down, we are all “foodies” - or in other terms, “enthusiasts of food.” One of the most exciting aspects of traveling overseas is trying new exotic culinary dishes. Hvar is not only a relaxing island away from your busy city life, but they also offer extraordinary Dalmatian cuisine. Are you ready for a tasty adventure of good food (or spiza as the locals would say)?

Hvar is along the Dalmatian coast and meals along this coast are heavily influenced by their Italian ancestry. The meals usually start with a pasta dish such as the always popular black risotto made with squid ink sauce. Most of the food is boiled and very light, and seasoned with homemade olive oil and seasonal herbs like chopped parsley.
Dalmatian cuisine relies heavily on the fresh fish and seafood that are caught but meat isn't forgotten. Thin slices of smoked Dalmatian ham are often on the appetizer list. Dalmatian pasticada is a meat stew (beef stuffed with lard and roasted in wine and spices) served with gnocchi.

As Hvar is famous for its wine, you can pair wine with any meal that you eat in this town. Don't forget dessert where you can try pećica na tećicu which is fresh goat's cheese fried with sugar and rožata - a juicy egg and milk pudding.

Suncani Hvar Hotels offers an amazing Taste Hvar package where all your senses will be taken on a gentle aromatic walk and culinary island picnic. You will join a Hvar botanist who guides you through the island's lush hills and valleys. Learn from his botanical knowledge as he helps you gather a variety of herbs and introduce you to a new world of aromatic wonders. Then enjoy a picnic lunch to use the herbs you have collected and spice up your meal.
Everything just sounds delicious.

Let Them Drink Wine – the Wine Festival in Hvar

Arsenal at the Main Square

Suncani Hvar Hotels hosted the first Wine Festival of its kind in the region during September and to say it was a success is an understatement. An event that lasted for three days, guests visited local vineyards to experience the authentic flavor and aroma of Hvar.

Guests included members of the Hvar winemakers association, local residents of the town, and foreign tourists. They all came together to celebrate the local wines while being introduced to the Hvar culture and beautiful landscapes.

During the three days, attendees enjoyed a grand reception at the Palace Hotel, tasted amazing food, harvested wine grapes, listened to great stories, and experienced fabulous entertainment by local groups; and of course, they tasted delicious local wines!

On the last night of the Wine Festival, guests came together for the big event – Arsenal held at the Main Square. It was a wine tasting of all the best wines of Hvar hosted by local wine producers. Other than the delicious finger food, amazing Hvar art, and authentic Hvar products, there was also entertainment provided by local vocal group Klapa Galesnik and ensemble Bagulin.

There was such a great response and attendance that we might consider making it a traditional event, what do you think? Did you attend our 1st Hvar Wine Festival? Will you come back to Hvar for our Wine festival next time? Tell us on Facebook and tweet us, we'd love to hear what you think!

Click here for the Hvar Wine Festival video and see it all in motion!

The testimonials of guests that joined us at the Hvar Wine Festival:
Parry (Seatle, USA): We love it! We are on our honeymoon and this is our first time in Croatia. We picked the grapes, enjoyed the wine, which are a bit sweeter then US wines.. We are already planning a trip back!
Guest (Zurich, Switzerland): Very friendly country, with good food and excellent wines. We didn't even know that the wines are that good. We'll definitely return.
Jonathan (journalist from UK): I am writing article about this part of Croatia. British know little about it and I think they should know more about islands, small towns, nice people..There is something magic about this island, and it is definitely worth investigating!

Over the past few years, Hvar has become the ultimate playground for the rich and famous, attracting celebrities such as Steven Spielberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey and Eva Longoria who celebrated her wedding anniversary with husband, Tony Parker.

These days, it wouldn’t be unusual to see Sharon Stone or Paris Hilton sipping a mojito in one of Hvar’s trendy harbor front bars. Celebrities like to visit Hvar because they are left alone. Bill Gates and Clint Eastwood sail in on their yachts and no one pays any attention. No one cares. There are no paparazzi, no fans, and no autographs.

It is rumored that James Bond actor, Daniel Craig visited the island of Hvar in 2005 after filming scenes for Casino Royale in Serbia and Montenegro. George Clooney has also returned to the island after his first visit in 2004 while filming Oceans Twelve.

Hvar also attracts Royalty every year;. Princess Caroline of Monaco and the Saudi Royal Family are also rumored to spend their summers on the island or anchored in one of many harbors on their luxurious yachts.

In August 2010, Formula 1 CEO, Bernie Ecclestone hosted a VIP party on his yacht in Hvar’s Harbor. Guests included Formula 1 World Champion, Michael Schumacher, Italian designer, Valentino and billionaire, Roman Abramovich.

October is actually a fantastic month to visit Hvar. On October 2nd, this harbor town celebrates its patron saint and protector St. Stephen; hence, St. Stephen’s Day. On this day, you can go visit the places that are dedicated to him such as the Town Square and the St. Stephen Cathedral.

Restaurants in Hvar

The Croatian island of Hvar has carved out a modest niche with its traditional cuisine, and tiny 'restaurants' – little more than a few tables in somebody's house – offering simple but delicious fare.

"Pomalo" (meaning slowly, or little by little) is the word exchanged between locals as they go about their daily routines in Hvar. "Pomalo", they say to each other as their paths cross on the way to the fields and vineyards. "Pomalo" when they meet in the shade of the palm trees to watch the ships in the harbor and gossip over a morning coffee. "Pomalo" as they discuss the night catch at the fishmongers, or pass on the way home from the market with fresh food for lunch swinging in plastic bags. Perhaps it's this frequently repeated advice, as much taken as given, that is responsible for the relaxed, timeless atmosphere that dominates Hvar – that is central to its cuisine.

Hvar is probably best known for two main things, its weather and its food. Traditional cooking and the island's laid-back feel, combined with an understanding and appreciation of fresh produce and fish, makes Hvar cuisine so delightful. The people of this Croatian island are far from lazy, but they do follow their own rhythm – a lifestyle dictated by the seasons, weather, and the simple fact of being surrounded by a vast blue sea – and the food is equally straightforward and authentic.

In Hvar Town itself, restaurants are plentiful, especially by the piazza, flanked by bars and eateries, serving the ubiquitous pasta and pizza, but also local Dalmatian delicacies such as octopus salad, black risotto, boiled langoustines, brodetto fish stew and lobster pasta, usually sided by aubergine and pepper. Above in the winding narrow alleyways of the tiny old town, the Menego Tavern serves its own wine and specialties like ‘drunk figs.’

Without a doubt Suncani Hvar Hotels hosts the most exclusive restaurants on the island, providing vibrant ambiences and savory dishes, with local ingredients and spectacular views. The Val Marina restaurant at the Hotel Adriana boasts mouth-watering dishes such as the octopus tempura, lobster carpaccio and truffle pasta as well as offering the chef’s selection of the daily catch.

Day or night, an idyllic romantic setting at a Suncani Hvar Hotel is just steps away. The signature eatery of the Amfora Grand Beach Resort is the Maestral Yacht Deck Restaurant, named after the region's pleasant, westerly breeze. The Maestral offers the finest aspects of a traditional Dalmatian konoba and sets them to unsurpassed bayside ambiance. Here you'll savor Dalmatia's grilled specialties and fine wines in a romantic atmosphere accentuated by teak wood and candlelight.

The unsurpassed ambiance provided by Bonj 'les bains' turn-of-the-century architecture and marvel at the wide-open view of Amfora Bay from its Steak and sea-food restaurant makes it Hvar’s premiere spot for fine dining and lounging. Bonj’s irresistible charm, delicious food and romantic atmosphere is simply a winning combination that will make you love it at very first sight.

Far from the traditions of Croatia and the island of Hvar, within the Riva Yacht Harbour Hotel, lays the European renowned Japanese restaurant, Sora. The philosophy of food at Sora is to offer a contemporary, sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese style of eating. The concept behind Sora cuisine is to deliver an authentic flavor of the east while respecting the traditions of the past.

We would love to hear from you about your dining experiences on the island of Hvar. Please send us your recommendations for restaurants and favorite dishes through our Facebook page; you can also follow us on Twitter.

The Unique Wines of Hvar

With the Hvar Wine Festival quickly approaching, we thought it would be a good idea to introduce you further to the distinct Croatian wines that make the island of Hvar so famous!
The vineyards on the southern side of the island are famous for red wine produced from the Plavac Mali grape – a cross between ancestral Zinfandel and Dobričić grapes.

The wines produced from this region commonly contain flavors and aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, pepper and spices. The flavour of the Plavac Mali grape varies depending on how and where it is grown. When grown in more of a New World style it can pick up Zinfandel qualities – deep and intensely flavorful. When grown in the traditional Old World style, it is much lighter. The body isn’t as thick and it has a smooth finish, pairing well with meals.

The central plain between Stari Grad and Jelsa is famous for its white wines. One of the most famous white wines is Bogdanusa, a delicious white wine that compliments all seafood dishes. There are many others such as Ivan Dolac, Zlatan plavac and Dobrogost.
At the Hvar Wine Festival, you’ll have an opportunity to tour the vineyards and sample these amazing wines, while also experiencing authentic Hvar food and entertainment. Check out more details about the wine festival here.
We are offering exclusive wine festival packages from as low as €249 per person! For more information, visit the Suncani Hvar Hotels website.

Why Hvar?

When thinking about a European vacation, many people are quick to name the most famous Mediterranean hotspots: Spain, Italy, France or Greece. Each one of these places is filled with rich history and undeniable beauty, but some of the most beautiful beaches and stunning coastlines belong to a different Mediterranean jewel: Croatia.
The island of Hvar is the sunniest island in Croatia, and one of the sunniest spots in Europe, boasting over 2715 hours of sunlight in an average year. Hvar has routinely been voted one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world and is quickly becoming one of the trendiest summer destinations. Recently Eva Longoria Parker and her husband, NBA superstar Tony Parker celebrated their third wedding anniversary in Hvar, partying at the Carpe Diem nightclub! http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20400864,00.html
Hvar is also one of the two most famous winemaking zones in Croatia. The southern side of the island is home to vineyards famous for their red wines, produced from the Plavac Mali grape, while the central plain between Stari Grad and Jelsa is famous for its white wines. Suncani Hvar Hotels first Wine festival, from September 16th - 19th, celebrates local wines, but even more so Hvar's tradition, the way of living on the island and all the joy that it brings.
Suncani Hvar Hotels offer an authentic Mediterranean experience combined with a unique sense of luxury and glamour that we have infused into each location. For example, our Adriana hotel, Croatia’s first and only member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World, offers the one-of-a-kind Sensorí spa. Integrating design elements inspired by the sensuous island environment, the Sensorí spa features both indoor and outdoor amenities on three levels, including outdoor terraces for massage, yoga and relaxation.
Hvar features all the best the Mediterranean has to offer: a rich history and unique culture alongside stunning landscapes, some of the best wine in the world and luxurious vacation resorts.

So, why Hvar? Well, we think the real question is…why not?
